This is a good rule of thumb, but is not always the case. I have framed many houses that the floor joists do not run in the same direction as the trusses. However, the floor joists will usually run in the same direction as the stairs. This is just a refrence however and is not always true. The other bit of information that I would like to pass along is that after twenty years of construction experience I have not found a stud-finder that I would trust completely. That is not to say that there are some that work, just to say that they are not foolproof. I will agree with the statement that you should put the aquarium perpendicular to the floor joists, however unless you are dealing with a 100 gal or more, there will be no short term concerns.
