Types Of Saltwater Tanks There are 5 main types of Saltwater tanks:
Fish Only w/ Live Rock: There is only fish and nothing but the fish and Rock.
Soft Coral Reef: There is only Fish, Rock, Soft Coral, and Polyps
Large Polyp Stony Reef: There is only Fish, Rock, and LPS Corals
Small Polyp Stony Reef: There is only Fish, Rock, and SPS Corals
Mixed Reef: There is the Fish, Rock, and any sort of almost equal mixture of the above mentioned types of reefs.
Hitchhikers. There are a variety of different hitchhikers on you live rock. All ranging from algae to coral, etc... Some of the most common hitchhikers are the following: Crabs, Small filter feeding clams, hard and soft coral, polyps, starfish, macro algae, hair algae, small featherdusters, flat worms, nudibranchs, snails, mantis shrimp, gobies, aiptasia, majano anemones, flower anemones, sponge, limpets, small urchins, tunicates, barnacles, gorgonians, peppermint shrimp, pistol shrimp, sea cucumber, small wrasse, spaghetti worms, and bristle worms.
Fish Upon deciding on what size tank you will have and the type of tank, you know have the decision of fish. Some good fish that are safe for reefs and the size are the following:
Up to 10 gallons: Gobies, Small Clowns, Damsels
10 - 30 gallons: Gobies, Clowns, Dwarf Angels, Firefish, Blennies, Dottybacks, Damsels, Basslets, Cardinals, Chromis
30 - 50 gallons: All mentioned above, Small tangs, Small bannerfish, Pyramid Butterflyfish, Hawkfish, Jawfish, Reef Safe Wrasse, Rabbitfish
50 - 100 gallons: All mentioned above, Most Tangs
100-250+ gallons: All mentioned above and any other reef safe fish
Fish for Fish Only Systems: All mentioned Above
50+ gallons: Puffers, Butterflyfish, Scorpions, Lions, Rays, Groupers, Triggers, Non Reef Safe Wrasse
500+ gallons: All fish mentioned and Sharks
Species Only Tank:
Sea Horses
Pipefish
Dragon Sea Moth
