I like the vodka method because it let me controll the nitrate level in the tank. I want it to be zero. If the level increase i just increase the amount of vodka and wait. If you have problems with high nitrate levels you can try to use vodka. You don't need zeolite if you don't want but it works better. Start with 0,5 -1 ml/L ( I don't know the american measure)

The first days will you see a white film on the glass, this is bacteria and nothing dangerus (good coral food) It will take couple of weeks before the nitrate level to sink. You have to be observant and reduce or increase the vodka till you land on a level that you want. I have used vodka for almost one year now with no problems. A lots of live rock and and a good skimmer to skim out surplus of bacterias is what you need. zeolite is a + to.
