And if he were just an ordinary hobbyist and if these were indo-pacific corals that he purchased and personally owned, then yeah, maybe it wouldn't be such a big deal. But even then, we're talking about *hundreds* of pounds of corals... truck loads! No matter who took them or for what purpose, I'd be quite upset when they were allowed to perish (even if it was by accident). The fact that they were protected Florida corals only makes the situation that much more alarming.

Look, if you want to argue that Mr. Borneman is a good guy who simply made a mistake, fine. You can sing that to your heart's content. But that doesn't change anything. You can't argue for someone's innocence by pointing out the faults of others. It just doesn't work that way.
