To answer your specific questions, if you want SPS corals, you have got to plan the tank to support them, since they generally require the higest quality water, most circulation and most light.

This usually means using MH bulbs on the tank.

For filtration, generally you want a large powerful skimmer and you want to turn over the water 5x per hour or so.

For circulation in larger tanks, Tunze Stream pumps on their Multicontroller are excellent, but extremely expensive. You can use powerheads, but make sure that they will support being turned on and off in short intervals. Most void the warranty if you do that.
