I agree with the suggestion that you should look at a single bigger tank rather than multiples. The sheer cost restrictions on what you were hoping to do would probably get you in more trouble with your wife than not doing the over-head tube.
As for a deep tank, I have see a very deep tank before and though it looked really cool, the owner told me that he has to submerge himself in order to do maintenance and that sucks. Even the placement of rock was very difficult and though some light gets to the bottom, not enough to properly grow anything you want to look at. If you want to see what it looks like, PM me and I will send you the link.
All Glass makes a decent 210G reef ready tank with dual overflows that looks pretty good. Or if you are looking for wow factor, spend some money on getting a custom tank that has Starfire glass and do something special with the finishing around the tank.
I can relate to what you are trying to do as I'm currently drawing plans for a new house where my wife has agreed to a 250-300G tank built in and the planning around it has got my head spinning. One thing that I find tough in the planning is making sure that you can afford the back-up equipment that makes many of the tanks on this forum look so fabulous. The right skimmer, lighting, reactors and controllers will probably put you back far more than the tanks. These are the things that are going to let you enjoy what you built after it's done.
