I was always under the impression that a healthy fish can get ich, but usually does not die from it because it falls off, and attaches to another fish. In our tanks, it attaches to the same fish over and over again; this being one of many differences between tank fish and wild fish. Again, I'm no authority on the subject and may be confused on the matter.
