I also agree with Cuddle. I'll be the big 50 on my next Birthday and I have never purchased a new car. I generally spend 2,000 or less on a car and drive it till a repair bill simply isn't worth it and then do it again. I figure I'm way ahead of the game $$$ wise. I get from point A to point B (the majority of the time) just like someone else that is driving a luxury car without the monthly payments and higher insurance costs. I have only stepped outside of that box once when we went to CarMax and purchased the car that my wife now drives and I spent like 15,000 on that one.
