Note, that there are now reverse flow sand filters that mainly are for biological filter as well. This suspends the sand in the water column and flows the water up through it.
I have never seen them flushed, but I know there is a whole flushing system on them. But I wonder how well the flushing works as if they reversed the flow they would compact the sand trapping the detritus in the sand column.
