Ask your LFS to hold fish for you as long as possible. Use this time to observe the fish, let it become acclimated to captivity, and watch it eat.

As a rule, Live Rock sold as "cured" IS NOT cured regardless of how it's advertised or how cool the distributor's facility looks in the pics OR how many times the word "cured" appears in that particular dealer's advertisment.

The ONLY exception to this rule is if the live rock came from your ESTABLISHED tank on the other side of the room or from a source that you trust as equally as yourself <like a friend's tank>. Mail order rock will never ever arrive at your door "fully cured." Unless of course it's not live rock at all....but even that needs to be cured before being tossed into your tank, but that's a different discussion....

Another thread just reminded me: if you want to watch your tank at night, buy a cheap flashlight and colour the lens red. A cheap way to do this is with red "glass paint" (sold in the craft section at Walmart where the plastic suncatchers are. A cheaper way is to use a red Sharpie marker.

While you're in the craft section at Walmart, be sure to pick up some cheap seashells - boil them for new hermit crab shells.

Grab some plastic canvas, too. It's good for making boxes to protect corals while they're eating, so that scavengers such as shrimp and crabs don't steal their food.

Don't forget the easiest, cheapest way to get a flashlight with a red lens.....join the military...when you're discharged, you'll have at least a dozen lying around

jlouv,

That is by far the best list of do's prior to entering this hobby that I have ever read, you should print that up on a laminated card to hand to anyone you see in a lfs with that newbie look.

I am sure the store owners won't mind, RIGHT......

Thanks John.....and except for the unfortunate LFS incident my wife instigated, I'm sure it'd lead to my being BANNED from my very first LFS by my own actions!!

Great stuff on Anemones Mary. Thanks. I'd give you some karma, but I have to spread it around some.

Mike
