As far as the other players go, like the FKNMS or NOAA or other such entities, why would they come to speak on a reef keeping hobby board? No offense to RAG or any other reef keeping forum, but why would these people care about hobbyists or our forums. They have much bigger things to worry about.
There's a lot more to the Truman Annex story than just Eric... and that will all come out in the wash eventually. But it won't come out here on a hobby web forum, or even in any hobby publication. Who, where and when the truth will come to light about the whole situation, God only knows. Again, I set up opportunitylost to stir up an interest. I had to kick up a little dirt to get people's attention. Now that that attention has been obtained, I personally feel my work here is done. I leave the rest of it in the hands of other people now.
And as far as Eric goes... I've only had one point about him. With my salt study critique, opportunitylost, etc. And that point is that he is, in my opinion, an irresponsible and inept scientist. A great hobbyist he may be, but this is not the man we should be looking to to "bridge the worlds." In my opinion, he represents us badly to the academic community. And at the same time, I believe he gives a false idea of what "rigorous research" really is to the hobbyist community. Let Eric be a *hobby* leader for what he is... a great *hobbyist.*
You want me to praise other hobby "leaders" rather than putting one down? I have. I've praised Toonen, Calfo and Shimek and many others. Toonen is an established, highly respected scientist. We're lucky he even so much as glances are way from time to time. Shimek, for all his rudeness and stubborn attitude, he still knows how to conduct a decent experiment and knows his science (however you might agree or disagree with his application of it to the hobby). Calfo is not a scientist by any stretch of the imagination, but dare I say, he's probably the living conscience or our hobby. And I could go on discussing the strengths (and weaknesses) of some of our hobby leaders. But that's not what this thread is about...

.
Now that is a motive and point I can get behind, I may not agree with Eric being the criminal some would like to think. And I do not feel he is guilty of any criminal acts in regards to the Truman annex stuff.
But I do agree that these glorified hobbyists making claims and standing on a soap box expecting us to bow needs to end. Jerel George, Eric B. as well as a few others who cruse these boards claiming to be masters of the hobby and the herds of Kool aid drinkers who follow them need to be brought into the light.
I'll not be a fool, The King is naked. (Think parable )
Umm the whole Tax dollar thing come on its more like tax dime or so if you are lucky especially for those that live in the middle of the country. I doubt the state of Il or MO spend a whole loty of its tax money on saving the us reefs. so it would be your Federal tax dollars and I would like to know what actual percent that really is.
It actually doesn't matter that I live in Missouri. I could even live in Florida and the tax issue would be the same. These corals were under a Federal Permit from the Federal Navy and in the Florida Keys NATIONAL Marine Sanctuary. (Also Federal).

the whole biodeverse arguement that was had.. Shut up its a fact if you want a mixed tank of any kind and not a species tank you will have things eat other things and then bingo not as biodeverse as when you started its called a food chain or the law of survival for a reason,,, Think Deer culling we build houses where deer live someone has to go and deers havent figured out weapons yet. Same thing happens in the glass.acrylic box holding your reef if someone sets up shop on a rock something else gets culled.
You cannot fulfill the duties of your permit if you mix Atlantic and Pacific species....plain and simple. This is not a survival of the fittest issue. The corals given to Eric were because he was a member of the CHDC and because someone in the government screwed up. The corals OWNED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT (and by extension, all of us) had a specific purpose under various permits and in the end, none of them could be used for that purpose.
