I completely agree... and actually, I've been told by personal sources that this event has changed (at least to some degree) the way that the FKNMS decides when and to whom to give these kinds of permits.

Hmmmm... Considering that all the facts are not yet in place, the only comment I have to make at this time is about the fallacy of mixing any private interprise with the government. Sticky all the way 'round IMO.

"The intent was to establish a line of "lab rats", which would be made available to other researchers without having to obtain more wild corals. Any fees charged is normal for any lab or facility that breeds/grows specimens. Such fees are neccessary to recoup the costs of breeding / care and shipment."

And again, why is a private for-profit enterprise involved in this? I don't know jack about Mr. Borneman himself, but I give kudos to him for the time and knowledge he lends to the hobby. It's foolish though IMO to think that people wouldn't think this at least a tinge shady, or at least giving the appearance of being a bit weird. Perhaps a gross oversight on his part, nothing malicious intended. We may never know.

Governmental regulations are rarely well planned.

I may share examples on how this relates to reefers in another thread in the future.

So true!

And I agree that the posts which were removed should stay removed.

Good question. And as you've pointed out, we need not assume any malice on anyone's part. None-the-less, it should still raise eyebrows (even more so considering that the effort apparently failed, resulting in the loss of so many corals).

Here's another angle.
Isn't it possible that Patrick framed Eric so he could try to bring more people to this dead board to talk about this controversial subject?

Next thing you know, he'll be sending out mass e-mails to all registered users with a link to this thread.

No.

Please, if you are at all able, keep it civil. The board is not dead, only members were emailed so that would not be a way to bring more people in. Logic problem there.

As I also received a mass email regarding this thread I visited to check what new is coming out...Nothing new...
As I followed the thread in ReefCentral ( Reef Central Online Community - For all of you Eric B. lovers/haters out there )I quote here a comment by Eric Borneman posted by Peter Eichler:
Quote:
From Eric Borneman:

"No. It's not real. This is just another in a seemingly undending series of tragic attempts to discredit my work spanning some several years now by persons unaware and uninvolved in any of the issues. There will be repurcussions for these defamatory blogs, posts, and sites and I am actively involved in stopping them. To comment further is to give credence to these ridiculous statements which anyone who knows me knows to be false.

Of course, the posts, emails, and wesites are carefully anonymized to prevent their identification, although those efforts have been unsuccessful. That about says it all."
The above statement should make all of us think why a problem that was solved 2 years ago is coming out again... .... ...

By the way I really want to thank Eric Borneman for his books and knowledge that he gave to all of us!

I agree that his books are a boon.

EB allegedly stated that he was actively involved in stopping this discussion on other sites. When the problem was brought up on other boards, was it supressed with "repercussions?"

PART of the problem was solved 2 years ago seemingly through enforcement. As was stated earlier, the effects are on going even today.

Don't you think that the fact the NOAA is now working together with Eric Borneman again shows that the problem is solved ???
