Default Shark in the FW!

The animal shelter where I work has received a few comments from citizens who have identified a "1' shark like fin" sticking out of the water in a large pond (almost a lake) that is freshwater. To our knowlege, there is not a outlet into saltwater. My boss asked me to see what I could find out but HE ABSOLUTELY FORBADE ME FROM DIVING IN THE POND TO LOOK FOR IT! I'm maybe thinking Darkstar would be interested in this since he works at Mote Marine and they are doing some heavy shark researching.

The possibilities I have so far envisioned:

#1. A Pacu or Large exotic freshwater fish has been released in this pond. A Large Pacu's body could look like a fin if it stuck out of the water when the level was low.

#2. There IS an unknown outlet somewhere that has allowed a Bull shark to enter without making the water briney.

#3. Some moron caught a blacktip shark and let it go in the pond where osmosis will remove the salt in its body and it will die.

Any other ideas?

Probably just a big FW fish. If there is a inlet the bull shark can certainly survive in FW for a while, so its not out of the question.

I'm looking at an aerial photo and I see a ditch that leads out into salt water. Although the ditch is only 20-30 feet from the pond, I cannot find a link. I think the witnesses are hospital workers and are pretty reliable in that they saw something.

I could also see this as a hoax done by someone. It could also be people seeing what they want to see, a shark fin, when in reality is was a tree branch or leaf or other material.

Far less likely theories might be -

A relative of the Loch Ness Monster, and they saw just part of it.

An as yet undiscovered species of FW shark.

A hand waiving at then by the creature from the black lagoon.

Also - it has not been rainy until lately and so there was no flood to move a shark there.

The description I think is that a fin moved up and cut through the water and was very dark and was about a foot high. I'll be checking this out. The pond appears to be about 250-300' long and about 50-75 feet accross. Our wildlife officer may become involved but this is not something a wildlife officer prepares for.

Quite a few years ago now, one of our local TV stations ran the movie in it's 3D "format", and had a promo where you could get 3D glasses at a local fast food chain, so you could see the movie in 3D.

Naturally, this was a the sort of film where they threw a lot of things at the audience, to make the most of the 3D effects.

This one time event got the local station an extraordinary rating for that night.

Congratulations on the post count. I completely missed my post count going over 4000.
