Sorry...Had to go to Chicago. What a drive! Bad news though, when I got there the "gentleman" said he forgot to mention in his craigslist ad that the tank had a "small leak". It leaked at the bottom in the back. As much as I hated to I left it in Chicago with a few "nice" words for the "gentleman". Oh well. It was a good trip with the wife anyway.
Had to postpone concrete for a couple of weeks and concentrate on my therapy. Arms getting much better.
I need to select another tank or find somewhere to get a similar one.
Lighting will be 4x400 MH for sure. With what I'll save by not going LED, I'll have more for livestock. Still not decided about skimming though.

Here's the next question in the mean time....with 300g plus in the system, at 25x water flow, that's about 7500gph. Any recommendations for pumps? should I go with one large pump on a closed loop, or should I go with two pumps with two separate closed loops? Maybe three pumps/loops?

Wow! That might have been a case for justifiable homicide. I can't believe someone would do that to another person. Make them drive all that way and then tell them the tank was a leaker. I think you did the right thing by leaving it there though.

Have you ever run across this aquarium manufacturer? Miracles Aquariums They are in Canada, but built a 225 Starphire tank for one of our reef club members and shipped it to Louisiana. Though the tank was moved to Houston before I ever got to see it in person, I fell in love with it from the pictures he posted. If I ever get another big tank, I hope to get them to build it. This is a pic of a similar tank to the one he got. I like the dual external overflows and the clean look of the trimless tank and the Euro bracing. Also used black silicone, which looked very nice with the trimless tank.

According to our member that got the tank, Miracles was a pleasure to work with and went out of their way to help him get the tank he wanted. They even sent him pics as his tank was being pur together.

You said money was no object.

Once you decide on the size tank you want, I would suggest getting in touch with Paul at OceansMotions and if you buy one of their products (4 or 8 way valve and/or Sequence pumps), he will help you design your closed loop(s) and recommend everything you need. He was extremely helpful to me.

When you have time, browse through their Water Pix forum and you can get all sorts of ideas on how to set up your closed loop system.

thanks for the helpful info phlounder. I sent an email to miracles with the dimensions that I want 84 or 96x36x36. I'll let you know what they say. I have never seen starfire glass in person...is it that much better?

I would say it is very similar to acrylic in clarity. The colors will be more vivid because you won't have that slight green tint like you would with regular glass. Have you ever looked down from the top on a reef tank? The colors pop and look different than when viewed from the front viewing pane of regular glass.

I know I am kicking myself right now for not getting it on my 140.

Be prepared for a shock when you get the price. that's a 475 or 540 gallon tank you are pricing. Starphire is not cheap. I am curious how much it will be though....and don't forget to get a price on shipping.

Rico, you might want to look at another tank manufacturer named Aquarium Obsessed. They do quite a few tanks in the US but are from Canada just like Miricles. They've been around a while and though in the beginning had a bit of a bumpy ride (read older articles in RC) I think you will find that anything post 2006 has amounted to "RAVE REVIEWS" Here is a link to their site. Aquarium Obsessed - Aquatronica, Custom Aquariums, H&S, Tunze, Fauna Marin, Milwaukee, Prodibio, Shuran, Sfiligoi and More! They make some damn nice tanks given what I've seen.

Just remember that the tank dimensions you sent to Miracles was huge...you still probably will want a sump and maybe fuge which will only further add to your gallon size. Remember to account for how much humidity that big of a tank will give you.

Good luck.

thanks for the info mseepman. I'll shoot them an email also to compare. I really liked the idea of getting the tank for 500. In the mean time if anyone knows of a used tank 300+ gallons let me know, preferably 36"tall and 30" wide. length is negotiable. Will post the quote when it comes.

Got the first quote from Aquarium Obsessed so here it is...

Timothy
Here is your tank quote
84x36x36
The front and sides 19mm starphire glass
The back and bottom 19mm regular glass
2 external overflows
4 holes
Eurobracing top and bottom
cross brace
All glass ground and polished
1 year warranty on tank
Your cost is $4857 + shipping $650
The 96x36x36 is $5236
Please let me know what a weir is.
Visit our web Aquarium Obsessed - Aquatronica, Custom Aquariums, H&S, Tunze, Fauna Marin, Milwaukee, Prodibio, Shuran, Sfiligoi and More! online store and
get a discount on any equipment ordered with the tank.

Let us know your intentions.

Thanks

John
Aquarium Obsessed

I asked them to cut a weir type overflow instead of holes. I guess they didnt know what I meant. I'm gonna send a pic of chucks 150 so they can see, if that's ok with chuck.

Not a bad price for the sizes. It's around what I expected. What do you think?
