One day I was cleaning behind my fish tank. I looked at one of the main boards that my tank is sitting on. IT looked funny so I pushed on it with my finger. My finger went right into the wood and a ton of termite crap fel out. I ended up removing all of the loose wood and crap to determine how much damage was done. It was not too bad but it was in the corner and I just dont need to worry about the tank falling because the stand is weak from termite damge. I have watch the spot and the rest of the stand for termte activity. I have not seen any new termite crap in over 3 weeks.
Well this weekend my wife and I decided to buy some wood and build a new stand. We used 2x4's for the frame, 1x3's for the door frames, 1x2's trim on the top and bottom, and 1/8 plywood for the sides and doors. The stand is 49"x19"x25". I posted some pictures of how it looks. We still need to cut some 1/4" plywood for the inside floor and stain it.
I am not looking forward to tearing down the tank and putting it back up. I will post some pictures as I do it. Wish me luck...
Looks like a very soild piece of construction. Since you are using dimensional lumber, do make sure the area the tank rests on is absolutely level. You don't want to crack the tank.
It is much more solid then the stand I currently have. I did make sure it was level and it is almost perfectly level between the 2 lines. I am just not looking forward to draining the water into tubs, removing the rock, and chasing the fish around with a net.
