OK so after a lot of reading I have picked up or will on wensday a 30 gallon tank for making a refugium. Now I have a couple more questions
1. Should I use the skimmer post or pre refugium?
2. Do I need mud and sand or just sand in it?
3. Where should I place the ro/di set up I will be getting?
4. Should I use a pump in the refugium or just the skimmer?
Any advice would be great and again thanks so much for the help so far fellas.
Hope to be starting the set up sometime soon and atleast building the stand this weekend now that I have an idea on which way I will be going and the size of the refugium set up iI have in mind.
If you are going to do a refugium I would leave the sand and the mud out, and just use it to culture chaeto for nutrient export. The amphipods will love all the nooks and crannies that the chaeto create and you will have most of the benefits without having a lot of the headaches.
Yes, it is a Typhoon III from Air, Water, Ice, but the filter choice is very different. I start with a 1 micron sediment, then a 0.2 micron sediment, followed by a .06 micron chlorine guzzler carbon block. This offers better protection of the carbon block and of the RO membrane. The RO filter is a BFS 150 gpd membrane, which is making 180 gpd at 99% rejection. Take notice of the booster pump; essentially it's a supercharger for the RO system. You can also see a nice TDS meter hanging from the booster pump. The DI filter I use now is a "silica buster" type cartridge. I'm trying this out for no specific reason other than to see if I can see different results in the display. I also drink LOTS of water, so having the RO only output is very beneficial to me.
I make about 30-40 gallons of water per week, so a high quality RO/DI system was a no brainer from the get-go.
