Hello all...i have been lurking for awhile...getting back into the hobby...had a 55 gallon reef years ago...doing it right this time...bought the books recommended here and have been reading for several months...taking it slow....I had initially wanted to eventually get a reef ready 125 gallon when i started this journey again....but i have recently had the chance to buy a "180 tall" (which i have never seen before ....96x18x25....with stand and canopy for what i think to be a good price $450 is this a good price? is this a decent tank? I have not seen the tank yet....but am in the process of getting more info....i think it may only have one overflow...is this or will this be an issue? just curious...any help would be appreciated....thank u !!
If you like the tank, then go for it. My advice is to buy what YOU want. A tank that size is going to require some extra cash in the lighting dept; bulbs aren't cheap (not the ones worth buying.) The front to rear dimension of 18 inches on a tank that size is going to look flat when you fill it.
A tank that size will also require a much larger filtration system than your 55; again, good equipment costs more than okay equipment.
One overflow should not be an issue. There is no set rule on how much you should overflow any tank. Just be sure to never pump IN faster than it drains OUT.
If I didn't say it before, I'll say it again....good equipment costs a lot more than the junk. This hobby is plagued with junk equipment.
When setting up a tank, take your time and don't hurry it along. It really makes a big difference when you have patience.
Thank you for the info...after a bit more reading I think I may stick with my previous idea of the "reef ready" 125. I also have a couple leads on a standard 180. I have read extensively on this board about the ease of the reef ready tanks vers. an aftermarket overflow. If an over flow is needed lifereef.com seems to be the way to go. If i do in fact go that direction (lifereef pre filter aka overflow) will it be hugely detrimental? I know it may be hard to measure these things....but the lifereef seem highly recomended here and i am wondering how much better...maybe on a scale of 1-10 would the reef ready tank be vs the lifereef overflow. I apoligize in advance for all the questions. I have bought the new marine aquarium and am reading it. I also plan on setting up a top off/ mixing station with barrels and R/O machine and have read many many threads here. Again, thanks for all the info...cheers
You will be a lot happier with a factory reef ready tank than a life reef hang on overflow or any aftermarket overflow for that matter unless you are an experienced hobbyist and designing your own custom tank after many tanks of experience.
