what about plumbing parts? like pipe, tubing, or any non-acryllic plastics used to make various parts and equipment(store bought and DIY)? I have seen no mention that manufacturers cure these products. Wouldn't they too leach into our water?

New system with new PVC, hose fittings, etc. should be run with salt water for seveal days.

Then a 100% water change made. Discard all curing salt water.

Just picked up a 65 gallon horizontal water storage tank. Polyethylene. I smelled the inside of the container and it has a strong bleach smell to it. I placed it outside and added a ball valve. I then added 65 gallons of hose water and some water softener salt for now. Any other advice and time frames would be appreciated. I need to pick up some salt at home depot tomorrow. Softener is very low and I didn't want to rob to much for now.

Set it out in the sun for a few days and ten empty it. I was told somewhere that you need 5 lbs of salt per 20 gal. So I put 20 lbs in mine waited 5 days. I then emptied and let air dry. It smelled like the previous but no as strong. I repeated this and after two times the smell was very faint. It seems okay now.

Here is a quote from Den Hartog Inc makers of the Ace roto mold products:
"Our tanks are made from virgin polyethylene resins.
The VT 0265-31 would have been made from ExxonMobil LL 8460 this material has FDA approval
for direct food contact. Polyethylene is an inert material and would not leach toxins, the plastics
that have been in the news for that are PVC and polycarbonate. Some of our tanks are used to
store ultra pure chemicals used in the computer chip industry."

I have a large rubbermaid that I bought a year ago that has stored books. Will I still need to cure it? Im going to West Palm to collect fish in May for my new 75 gallon tank so I just wanted to make sure.

If there is any odor, then cure the container.
