Gary,
I left the hobby about 5 years ago, so i'm very out of date. I recently got my hands on a 80 gallon. I'm thinking about a 30 gal sump/refugium. What skimmer would you suggest? The goal is to have my 80 looking like your 75
Man I really hate to recommend equipment to other people. The 75 had a small EuroReef skimmer on it. The model numbers have all since changed, but it was probably equivalent to the current RS-100.
I still like the LifeReef Skimmer and I think Gecko will back me up on that. The quality of craftsmanship is second to none. I just should have gotten a bigger version for my 140. I think it would handle a 75 nicely.
There are really a number of good skimmers out there for that size tank. Just depends what fits in your budget.
Thanks Gary I appreciate your advice. Well my plan is to, well save until i can have everything set up as I've always wanted, so really my budget is open-
This is not going to be pretty. Took some pics of the Orca 200 when I cleaned it this past weekend.
This was after six days skimming. I have the skimmer skimming pretty dry and I get a real frothy foam head that stays in the cup for some time before the bubbles burst. No fluid stays inside of the collection cup, since the drain is located on the bottom. Lots of solids stay in there though and just cakes up. The fluid that drains out is very dark - and smelly. I drain into an open receptacle, so some of the liquid does evaporate.
Solids caked all around the inside of the skimmer.
Example of the foam head that is ever present inside of the cup.
Removed some of the foam and you can see all of the gunk that collects inside the cup.
I haven't really tried to skim wet with it yet. For now it is working well and I would rather leave well enough alone. So far, no flood! Knock on wood.
