Wow guys. I'm flattered now. I'm a newbie compared to you ole reef farts.

Got a question though OSB. With only half the LR and going BB, what media are you relying on for the biological filter to grow in/on? Is there a remote DSB hidden somewhere or something?

Chuck,

I'm relying on the LR in the tank and the 20lbs of nano rock that sits between the bubble traps inside the sump; no remote DSB or anything else. I have no way to actually prove this, but my thinking is that 100lbs of rock with high flow on all sides is just as good as 200lbs of rock stacked into a pile with little to no flow. Also, I do not have a tank full of fish, so the need for the additional biological filtration is diminished. Add all that with a high water volume to dilute any potential wastes and things should be good to go.

Keep the fish population down and I personally (as an "old reef fart") think it will be fine.

I should get Patrick to change my user name to "Old Reef Fart." I kinda like it!

It will be cool to see the bottom turn completely purple over time. That will certainly look different - and very colorful.

End of the year update:

I just can't leave well enough alone, so I did a bit more scaping of the rock. It came out very well, though it's hard to see what I did by looking at a picture. I also added some frags I received from a semi-local reefer who happens to be a die hard SPS guy. I really need to get back into a testing regiment as the consumption of calcium is becoming a concern. I can still get away with using water changes to keep up with demands, but only time will tell how long that will last.

Here are a few more recent pics. Take notice of how the coralline algae continues to grow on the starboard bottom. This tank is still completely void of any unwanted algae. I added a few coral frags to compete with the coralline algae. I had to send a Tunze stream out for repair. Tunze customer service is A1; pretty much what you would expect from a high end manufacturer.

Right side; you can see most of the fish expecting food; stinkin' beggars!!

I have a Bristletooth Tomini Tang in quarantine at the moment. It's a really nice specimen, but hard to get a good picture of it. After that, I will throw around the idea of a male blue throat triggerfish. Other than that, I don't plan on any more fish.
