LOL - You don't want to see the seams. I was going for functionality not beauty. I don't have any of the real watery weldon anyway. Also, I'm not sure that my saw cuts perfect enough to be able to use that stuff. I used the gel so that I "could" fill in the gaps.

The round top versus the rectangular holder is exactly why it stays in place.
I wouldn't have had the space for a round holder in my sump and my socks seem to kind of go wide and flat(ish) anyway. A rectangular holder seemed to be the perfect choice.

My socks have some kind of rubber band (not stretchy though) in the top of them. I probably will make my own or have someone else make me a bunch. I'll put elastic in the top of them so they can just hug the outside of the holder I made. That should work.

To tell you the truth, I used a jointer on all my edges before using the weldon. I set the jointer at 3/32 of an inch and did two passes. Then they were perfect.

I don't have a jointer. Cuts are made on a portable table saw with an old blade.

It works..........

We are at about the 6 week mark here on this tank. I think the rock that I bought was laden with old crud because I'm having a hair algae issue on one of the rocks as well as the overflow and back glass along with some diatoms on the substrate.

Chuck, I have this problem in my HOB overflow. My overflow output tube is laying on the bottom of the sump in it filter sock. If I raise it up so that it's not 12" into the water, would that stop my surging?

I always liked the smell of it and seemed to put me in a good mood while building things.

It has to dry a bit more before I road test the new holder. Right now I have some surging in the overflow and part of the problem is that the overflow tube is beneath the water line in the sump and causing a bit of back pressure. When I put the new sock holder in the sump I'll cut the overflow tube off a bit and I think that problem will be solved as well.

Maybe. I would highly suggest that you allow the water to "fall" into the sump, even it's it only 1/2" fall. This will stop the back pressure. Will it totally stop your surge? Still it's only a maybe. You may still have to play with the actual flow rate into your overflow area. Between the two though, you should be able to get it pretty darn quiet with no surging, especially if you are using a durso standpipe.

unfortunately, I can't use a durso as I have a HOB overflow. I will try to shorten the overflow pipe into the sump though to see what that does.

Thanks.
