After many years of planted tanks, I took it all down and went back to the old school method; fake plants, large round gravel, and a fake background.

Anyone else have FW tanks?

I am thinking of setting up my second 58 gallon reef ready tank as a species only cardinal tetra tank.

we have two FW tanks. One in each of the kids rooms. a 38 and a 20 high. Goldfish and a Chinese algae eater in one. Black tip shark, 5 tetras, 2 HUGE Silver dollars, and another Chinese algae eater in the 38 . Had a bamboo shrimp but the shark thought he was tasty. Live bamboo plants along with fake plants too. Went with a river theme in the 38. My daughters 20 high has a mixture of saltwater and freshwater decorations along with loads of other crap. ( She wanted to do it herself. Running Aquaclear 70's on both.

I did away with my cichlids and went to a much larger project in water gardens. Here is a picture of my current water feature in progress.

Here is my projected completion look.

This is almost a full tank shot of my FW 90 gal planted aquarium. It's about a 18 months old and since then some replanting has been done.

Yes, in FW, if at all possible, use real plants. First, they grow, so you don't need too many to start with. Second, live plants look so real, especially when compared to their plastic counterparts.

The tank has an Ehiem canister filter, and an additional powerhead for circulation. The lighting is two 150w 10000K HQIs.
