I also agree with Cuddle. I'll be the big 50 on my next Birthday and I have never purchased a new car. I generally spend 2,000 or less on a car and drive it till a repair bill simply isn't worth it and then do it again. I figure I'm way ahead of the game $$$ wise. I get from point A to point B (the majority of the time) just like someone else that is driving a luxury car without the monthly payments and higher insurance costs. I have only stepped outside of that box once when we went to CarMax and purchased the car that my wife now drives and I spent like 15,000 on that one.

Picked up the car today total was $160.00. I drove away and the light came on, turned around and it is the cam position sensor. The mechanic says he can change it, Another $100.00 but in his experience I should just ignore it until it becomes a driveability problems as they have changed them in the past with no resolution. So I am driving it. I will try and find it on the engine and I may weekend warrior it and put in the $40 part myself.

Went to fleet farm today and got a new battery for the motorcycle. $35

have been beating my head against the wall on this one for a while. Damn bike is just real hard to turn over.

Today I went and got a brand new battery. Put it in and the starter solenoid just clicks. It groaned and turned over once, after that the solenoid just clicked. Anyhow, if the starter is hot from the engine running has anyone had a starter that would not crank?

I am thinking the heat from the engine heated the starter which increased the impedence and thus the battery does not have enough juice to crank it over.

In a bit when I have cooled off, I am going out to clean the battery wires again and reattach and pray.

Anyhow, at least I got a 80 mile ride in on it today.

Patrick,

What you have described is very common when people use headers with small block chevy's. The pipes are routed around the starter; they get the starter solenoid so hot, that it doesn't work.

Also, new batteries need to be charged. I was stuck at a gas station last week when I found this out. May want to stick it on a charger overnight.

The solenoid is remote from the starter. Sounds like a common problem on this era of bike.

I bought the premium battery which is fully charged. I put it on the electronic peak charger and maintainer i have and it came out with 12.1 volts and battery full. Already at peak charge. So now I have to figure out how to get the starter out of the parts bike.

Just an FYI, using a multimeter to check car or motorcycle batteries is a useless endeavor. Also, check the grounding point on the bike. Easy stuff first!!

These are all horror stories. I guess we will live and learn?

Patrick,
Didn’t you just rebuild the top end of this bike and have you checked your starter?
