I've used all the listed materials. I didn't think polly filter pads did muchas far as phosphates go, but they do remove other stuff.

I didn't see much difference between phosguard type products and rowa phos, but others feel differently. My big objection to rowa phos is the price.

Polyfiter pads..wiped out my sand bed algae...
*Edit*
Cant say the above did much...I believe it was the salt switch from IO to BIOSEA that actually rid me of the algae issues

Now I use GFO from bulkreef which i bought by the pound...just building a DIY PO4 reactor...

Fortunately I have not had the need to employ these methods.
I do get a small amount of Algae on the tank acrylic but it helps suppliment the snails diets! I clean the viewing panes once or twice a week, and the back once a week.I think the corals also benefit from the scraped Algae as they would from Phytoplankton.

I didn't really have a phosphate problem. No hair algae or the sorts. It was marginally detectable with a salifert kit, but I wanted the best calcification rates possible for my sps and lps which phosphate interferes with.
