Yea, your new choices are fairly hardy and easy to care for and will had some striking color to your setup. I just think that the mandrian is a bad choice for anyone and should be left in the oceans.
I introduced my mandarin at about six months. My pod population has diminished as 'reeffish' stated. But he's actually healthier now then he was when he was eating pods.... For some strange reason he has taking a liking to mysis shrimp, and Formula 2 pellets.
He usually swims over to all the soft corals after I feed the tank and picks up anything that they've caught. It's pretty ammusing to watch.
my mandarin gobie doesn't look to be eating. He's really skinny. My scooter gobie is doin great. he even swims up to the top and gets food when i squirt it in. What does a mandarin eat i was told bring and maybe krill but he doesn't look to be touching it. pet store fed him there the same thing and he said he would eat it. looked great the first week but now he doesn't even swim with his fins up. what can i do?
I'm sorry to hear about your fish. I hate to have to be the one to tell you this but, you really need to research the requirements for keeping a specimen before you buy it. Mandarins really need a large tank with a good micro fauna population in order to survive. I've heard that mandarins can be trained to eat other foods (brine shrimp, etc.) but you shouldn't expect a newly imported specimen to have any interest in food other than what they would naturally eat (that is live amphipods, copepods, etc.).
As for your mandarin, it doesn't sound like he's doing too well. What you should really do is give it to somebodey who has a large, well established reef tank so that the mandarin can feed on the tank's natural food population. At this point it may be the only way to save the fish's life. I hope this helps.

Dax is correct about the Mandarin's mainly eating pods. One possible quick fix you might want to try until a permanent solution is decided on would be pods in a bottle from a RAG sponsor. Here is a link: http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merch...Category_Code=
A pod bottle is a good idea. In the meantime, you may want to consider getting a good piece of live rock from the LFS or another reefer. There should be a good population of pods on it.

The foods I have seen my mandarin take are frozen blood worms and live black worms. Either are worth a try, but every fish is different, and pods are the best thing for them.
okay i can get some live food to put in there but the fish store told me they have frozen cyclopods. would that be a good one to try? but i'll try and tell ya
my mandarin is spoiled. He only eats pods. I have tried everything but pods are the only thing on his menu. I would suggest some pods and a fuge and some LR
